Board of Directors

Susan Gray

Susan is a first-generation immigrant from South Africa with extensive experience in nonprofit leadership and community service. She worked for Community Coordinated Child Care (4Cs), a respected Johnson County nonprofit organization, until her retirement in 2019. Through her decades of nonprofit experience, she developed expertise in program administration, community engagement, family support services, and organizational development. As an immigrant herself, Susan understands many of the challenges newcomers face when adapting to a new community, culture, and systems. She believes her experience with a successful nonprofit organization that has served Johnson County for nearly fifty years provides valuable insight as IWNJC continues to grow and strengthen its capacity to serve immigrant and refugee families.

Susan currently serves as the coordinator of IWNJC's ESL program, helping connect community members to language learning opportunities that support economic mobility, community participation, and long-term integration. Through this role, she works closely with immigrants and refugees, helping create welcoming spaces where participants can build confidence, develop skills, and strengthen connections within the community.

Susan brings valuable experience in nonprofit governance, program development, volunteer coordination, and community outreach. Her leadership helps advance IWNJC's mission of empowering low-income immigrants and refugees through education, leadership development, and community engagement.

“From South Africa to Iowa, I’ve learned that community is built when we lift one another up — especially those starting a new life.”
