Afabwaje Kurian worked for a decade in the public health field with a focus on racial and ethnic health disparities. She was an evaluator with an agency under the Department of Health and Human Services that provided funding to programs serving marginalized and vulnerable communities, including immigrants. She led research and evaluation teams in assessing the efficacy of HIV/AIDS services, community health centers, and maternal child health programs. She is currently a fiction writer whose short stories and novels focus on racial identity, colorism, assimilation, faith, and the tension between traditional African beliefs and American ideals.
